Former mayor and current mayoral candidate William Johnson outlined his vision for the future of Rochester at a press conference held today at the Port of Rochester . He also noted the investments that were made to both the Port and greater Charlotte neighborhood through the Fast Ferry project.
“I have said and still say that the Ferry project was ended by the Duffy administration prematurely, before it was given a chance to prove whether it could succeed. It was never planned as a one year venture, and it never had an opportunity to sail for one full season. ” Johnson said.
“Even so, the fact is that the project, from day one, created more value than it cost. Federal grants to build the ferry terminal, new streets, a new river wall, pedestrian walkways, and other infrastructure totaled $30 million. The ferry also helped us obtain additional millions of dollars in federal transportation enhancement funds to rebuild Lake Avenue as a gateway street and the O’Rourke Bridge as a signature bridge…..”
Former mayor and current mayoral candidate Bill Johnson today criticized Tom Richards stance on economic development, as well as rank-and-file workers.
While Tom Richards has promised jobs to the construction trades through the Midtown project, his actual record reflects a very different story, Johnson said. That record includes the thousand-plus construction jobs lost when he helped ax the Renaissance Square Project, to the 225 workers that were laid off after his sale of RG&E to Energy East.
“Tom Richards plays at being a supporter of unions, but its telling that none of the ones who deal with him on a day-to-day basis have any interest in supporting him,” said Johnson, who has been endorsed by the Rochester Locust Club, Rochester Firefighters Union Local 1071; and AFSCME Local 1635, as well as the Rochester Teachers Association and BENTE. representing the city’s teachers and non teaching school staff.
